萬國博覽會(World's Fair)

世界博覽會(Universal Exposition/World's Fair)，也稱為國際博覽會或萬國博覽會，是一種國際性規模的集會與展覽。參展國可向世界各國展示本國當代的文化、科技與科學和產業上正面影響世界各種生活範圍的成果。初始參展主辦國以歐美國家為主，直到1970年日本大阪主辦萬國博覽會後才開始有亞洲國家主辦。主辦單位有時也以民間機構為主，不過也有政府主辦的世博會，也有政府與民間機構合辦的。

萬國博覽會起源於法國傳統的國家展覽，也就是1844年於巴黎舉辦的法國產業展(French Industrial Exposition)，而這類展覽也隨後擴及歐洲以及英國。第一屆也是最著名的萬國博覽會在1851年於英國海德公園的水晶宮主辦，全名為Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations，想法來自於當時英國維多莉亞女王的丈夫亞伯特親王，也被視為是第一次的國際性製造商品展示。對當時社會各層面造成影響， 包含藝術與設計教育、國際貿易與國際關係以及旅遊，並隨後多次在歐美各國繼續舉辦直到今日，只是舉辦時期一開始並沒有像奧運會或者世界杯足球賽一樣有比較固定的舉辦年份或日期。不過直到今日科技、文化與體育等表現傑出的前蘇聯或者俄羅斯還沒有舉辦過萬國博覽會也似乎沒有舉辦的念頭，而另一新興經濟體印度也沒辦過世博會，而小國寡民的比利時共舉辦六次與法國舉辦次數相同僅次於美國的14次。

自2000年後目前世博會可分為兩類，一類是展期通常為半年的「註冊類世博會」，從2000年起五年一次；另一類則是展期通常為三個月的「認可類世博會」，穿插於兩屆註冊類世博會之間。2017年將於哈薩克舉辦世界博覽會而2020年則將於阿拉伯聯合大公國舉辦。

自第一次展覽後整個萬國博覽會大概可以分為三個不同的時期：

工業化/Industrialization(1851–1938)

在此時期的萬國博覽會專注於貿易以及科技發明與科技進步，展覽會場是當時最尖端的科學與科技的展覽場館。著名的1851 London、1853 New York、1862 London、1876 Philadelphia、1889 Paris、1893 Chicago、1900 Paris、1901 Buffalo、1904 St. Louis、1915 San Francisco與1933–34 Chicago都立下了里程碑。著名的電話發明也是在這個時期正式亮相。

文化轉變/Cultural Exchange(1939–1987)

1939-40年的紐約萬國博覽會轉變了以往世界博覽會的原始焦點。從這次博覽會開始萬國博覽會採取了特定的文化主題並預測一個有著更美好未來的社會，科技創新不再是主要的展場主題。那年的世博會主題是建立明日世界(Building the World of Tomorrow)，1964-65的紐約世博主題則變為透過了解走向和平(Peace Through Understanding)。而1967年的蒙特婁萬國博覽會主題為男人與人類與世界(Man and His World)，更激勵有效地跨文化對話對上創新的轉變，加拿大甚至為此成立了蒙特婁博覽會隊的大聯盟球隊。

國家品牌/Nation Branding (1988–present)

從1988布里斯班世博開始，主辨或參展國開始利用萬國博覽會與參展會館作為增進國家形象的平台。尤其芬蘭日本加拿大法國與新加坡特別明顯。2000年的漢諾威萬國博覽會有七成以上主要參展國的目的在於增進國家形象。在這個國家形象為重要資產的世界，展覽會館成為廣告活動而展覽為成為國家品牌的載具。而西班牙更利用1992年巴賽隆納夏季奧運與賽維亞萬國博覽會成功塑造現代與民主國家以及歐盟卓越會員的形象。
