隨著美中貿易戰開打,世界主要製造商紛紛撤出中國,中國的海運業需求開始衰退,最大的中國海航甚至面臨倒閉的問題,也隨著世界製造業版圖的改寫,世界船運也起了不少變化。歐洲雖然早就沒有甚麼主要製造業,歐洲最主要的製造業剩汽車、造船、航太、生技與時尚工業等,其他主要產業是在金融、商業與服務業等三級以上產業發展,不過在世界海運業前五名卻包辦了四名,可謂勢力龐大。美國雖然穩居世界第一大市場,不過除了軍事、航太、汽車、電子與半導體、造船、鋼鐵、化工、能源以及生技等少數關鍵重要產業外,多數生產製造的二級產業重心多在海外,美國本土已經往三級或以上的產業發展,因此美國海運業並沒有像空運業那麼發達,最大的船運公司甚至還擠不進世界前二十名,川普才會喊出讓美國製造業回流的政策,希望Make America Great Again。
而台灣的製造業在主力撤出中國後,轉變成全球化布局,航運業也跟著全球化發展,雖然台灣船隊上很多貨輪掛的根本不是台灣國旗,但不影響台灣貨櫃船運在世界海運業的競爭力。
