自1990年代隨著PC的網路卡與具有網路功能的PC作業系統Win95的問世,網際網路開始普及於先進國家與開發中國家的校園網路,到千禧年後新的網路作業系統Window XP以及Win7等及寬頻網路(Cable Modem /xDSL/Fiber Optics/Wireless)開始流行於世界的家庭與企業中,目前世界的網際網路使用者已經超過二十四億人且還在持續增加中。但世界仍有將近三分之二的人口是沒有網路可用的,因此Facebook的創辦者祖克伯聯合了數家公司(成員主要是跟行動通信相關的半導體商、軟體商與品牌廠商,包含Erisson、Facebook、Mediatak、Nokia、Opera、Qualcomm與Samsung)打算推行internet.org計畫讓世界其他沒有網路可用者也可以使用網路。

隨著2007年Apple開始推出iPhone以及到了2009年以後搭載Google Android作業系統的智慧手機熱賣後,自2011年後智慧型手機的出貨量已經超過PC,而2013年平板電腦的總銷售量也超過PC加NB總合,更正式宣告行動通訊(Mobile Communication)時代的來臨。而行動通訊在先進國家早在幾年前就從3G 跨入4G ,目前則有國家打算推出5G 了。而且很多使用者的電腦使用行為也逐漸從單機走向雲端服務。而且不只電子產品網路化甚至連大型家電也早在1990年代後期就開始走向網路化了,而目前Apple與Google更是準備將智慧手機與汽車產業結合。依據Cisco的歷史資料,全球的網路資訊流量在2012已經達到每個月32,223PB(目前大多數網路資訊流量以影音串流為主,而全世界所有的印刷品內容所含總資訊量(包含書與雜誌等等)也不過才300PB,且行動通訊的網路流量到2012年也達到885PB了),至於社交網站Facebook的總帳號數到2011年已經超越地球總人口數了(當然很多人有兩個以上的帳號而且還有不少帳號是政府或者私人企業的)。2012年全球B2C 電子商務的總營業額已經超過一兆美元,而電子商務的龍頭Amazon.com的營業額也從2000年的25億美金成長到2012年的610億美金。自2008年7月11日 Apple的App Store問世到2013年5月16日 已達到500億次的下載量且在2013年的總營收已經達到250億美金已經遠大於整個音樂產業160億美金的產值。
直到2013年,世界網際網路總人口使用率以歐洲最高達到75%(不含獨立國協),非洲最低僅有16%,這裡指的是撥接或寬頻網路並不包括電信網路。而依單國使用人口多寡來算依序為中國、美國、印度、日本、巴西、俄羅斯、德國、奈及利亞(以平均國民所得而言有點令人驚奇)、英國與法國,台灣棑在31名,不過依單國人口來算當然一國人口越多越占優勢。所以接下來我們以網際網路滲透率來看則前10名國家分別為冰島、挪威、瑞典、荷蘭、丹麥、盧森堡、芬蘭、紐西蘭、列支敦士登與卡達可以說就是以歐洲小國寡民又高所得的國家為主了,台灣則是36名(這個排名是把沒有成立國家的區域或某些國家的海外領土也算進來)。至於幾十年後人類可能開始移民太陽系其他星球(行星或衛星)後是否會建立太陽系網路(Solar System Internet)則仍不確定。
