美國是世界最早將潛艇軍事化(南北戰爭時的海龜號)與核子動力化的國家，在二戰後多數的潛艇除了少數實驗新裝備與新動力的潛艇僅有單艘外，多數是同一種主要設計而僅有少數批次變異的多艘艦體一個級別設計。而在世界第一艘擁有幾近無限續航力的核子動力攻擊潛艇鸚鵡螺號(之所以命名鸚鵡螺號可說是向海底兩萬里致敬)服役後，美國的潛艦艦隊也開始逐漸全面核子動力化。目前美國擁有世界最強大的全核子動力攻擊潛艇與核子動力彈道飛彈潛艇艦隊，可說在目前世界上沒有國家可以匹敵。冷戰後期美國也完全以電腦輔助設計維吉尼亞級潛艇，用以代替原本要取代洛杉磯級潛艇功能強大但造價卻太高昂的海狼級潛艇(最後只造了3艘)以及接近服役年限的洛杉磯級核子動力攻擊潛艇，而新一代的SSBN哥倫比亞級的開發計畫也正展開中。美國潛水艇的外型已經從葉卷型更進一步到魚雷型與X型尾舵加噴射泵推進器。
依據美國海軍的造艦計畫，2045年美國海軍包含無人艦艇總，總數將達到523艘作戰艦艇，是自1980年代雷根政府的大造艦計畫後的另一個造艦高峰，其中包含66艘SSN與12艘SSBN，但無人水下潛艇則數量未明。
