空中預警機通常以民航機或者是運輸機改裝而來,因為此類飛機的內部可使用空間大,能夠安裝大量電子與維持運作的電力與冷卻設備,同時也有足夠空間容納數位雷達操作人員,此類飛機通常配備於空軍。也有國家以直昇機作為載具,不過這一類的小型空中預警機由於受到搭配的裝備較少的影響,效能不如以中大型飛機機體改裝而來的機種,但也由於機體較小且可垂直起降,多數國家海軍多使用直昇機作為早期預警用。由於受到軍艦空間的限制,除美國E-2空中預警機外(目前僅有美國跟法國的航艦有搭載此種預警機,未來或許俄羅斯印度或中國或巴西的CATOBAR航艦也會搭載自己設計或者外購的大型早期預警機),預警直升機則多用於海軍艦隊的早期預警,是目前大多數有航艦的國家用來作為航艦戰鬥群早期預警的方式。

However, these aircraft have the same level of electronics as the E-2C Group II Hawkeyes with their APS-145 radars.
